Personality: Veras comes across as a cold and calculating individual, showing little in the way of warmth for those around him. Many mistakenly accuse him of being heartless, but this is far from true. He loves his children deeply, after his own father chose to try and have him killed he was resolute in his desire to be a much better parent. He would tear the universe apart for his family, which includes his twin sister and grandson. Beneath his cold exterior, Veras is an extremely passionate man and it this chaotic passion which is why he feels the need to withhold his emotions from the world.
The emotions raging inside of Veras are so strong that they physically manifest in the form of the black flames with which he obliterates his enemies. He is merciless towards those he calls his foe, leaving none alive in his wake regardless of cries for mercy or repercussion. At one time his wife, Maerim, calmed the chaotic storm that is his mind but alas with her death, he has retreated into himself to protect the universe from the damage he might do in the wake of his grief. In recent centuries however, Léona Verita, the keeper of the Great Library has become a calming influence upon his volatile emotions.
History:Veras was born Veras Sildras Fenir, High Prince of Melandrisia. As a young man he learned the way of the Melaer and what was expected of him when he one day took the throne, his father was a good man back then and a caring parent who doted on his son and his wife equally. His mother was a good woman who cared for him deeply, and often read him tales of his grandparents Castion and Gaia. Veras grew up to be a wise and kind man, but was caught up in his father’s corruption which forced him to partake in the civil war which tore Melandrisia apart and saw his aunt, Laer, executed by his father.
It was this event which began to sow the seeds of doubt in his mind about his father’s intentions, though he never once voiced his objections. His father’s ascension came not long after the civil war and Veras was put on the throne as King of Melandrisia, he began by creating social reforms, forming the magus and military council to govern more efficiently and he also created the royal fitness clause which mean the king or queen of the time could be deposed if they were proven to be a tyrant or unfit to rule. Such an act had to be agreed by majority vote in the magus and military councils however, stating such a decision could not be left to chance.
While he was king he gathered to him a group of talented individuals, including the lorekeeper and talented magus Melaus, and the master of subterfuge and assassination, Rainak. It was in the second century of his rule that Veras received a message from his father, Mael, who told him of a secret city in the mountains where the last supporters of Laer had made their home and were plotting to overthrow Veras to reclaim Melandrisia. Veras still trusted his father enough to follow his instructions and led the army of Melandrisia against the hidden Laer supporters, but the enemy was waiting for them and they were defeated, Veras was captured.
He didn’t know how long he was kept locked away in the enemy cells, blind, deaf, mute and unmoving due to the powerful magic they used to hold him. He knew he was there for centuries with only his mind for company and the occasional voice of the enemy leader, come to speak to him as if he were some great source of conversation in his state, the only comfort it brought was that his deafness was briefly relieved in this time. She was a strange woman, strong and charismatic and in his stupor he thought that he might have loved her, were she not the one who kept him sealed in this long and cruel method of torture. She would touch him sometimes, in ways that may not have been unpleasant had he not been numb to the world.
A voice grew in his head in time, a voice he did not recognise but greeted him like it knew him, it was a woman’s voice. At first he thought it was his captor getting into his head, but quickly he came to realize it was more gentle, familiar even when he had time to think on it. It began to tell him how he could become powerful, it even started to teach him and told him of his father’s duplicity, how a seer among the angels had told him he would be killed by his own son and that had caused Mael to lay the trap for Veras. She seemed to find it amusing that it was his belief in the prophecy that had laid the groundwork for it to come true, Veras didn’t share in finding this funny.
The voice grew more familiar to him, like a second mother nurturing him and helping him see through his own naive view of the universe. Finally it revealed itself, it was Laer, his aunt thought dead lived on imprisoned by Mael in Overworld where his father now ruled having deposed the previous God of Order with a coup somehow. Finally she gave him the gift she had wanted to impart upon him, with her remaining power she passed to him her essence and it broke the seals that bound him. Veras awoke, filled with thoughts of vengeance upon his captors and with his newfound power he exacted it.
The last city of the true melaer fell in rivers of golden blood. Veras destroyed the place singlehanded, killing everyone from adult to child within its walls, his anguish rushed across Melandrisia like a shockwave. There in the palace of his captor he found her, the one who had taken his dignity and pride, the one who had had her way with him while he had been incapable of stopping her. And there with her were the fruits of her actions, twins boys still in their cradle being rocked by their mother. But she would not rock them any longer, for Veras tore her arms from her first, and then ensured she knew true paint as she fell from her palace into the rivers of blood below.
Veras had a mind to kill the children he had not sired by his own will, but looking upon them he couldn’t help but feel the pain of his father’s betrayal clawing at his soul and could not bring himself to slay his offspring so callously. He took the boys up and cradled them in his arms and that was how they found him, his most loyal legions and his closest advisors. Selene, Rainak, Yomi and Melaus. He told them the truth and they listened, they did not question him or think him insane like other Melaer might and they swore to help him depose his father. The rivers of blood still run in the mountains of Melandrisia, but Veras was gone from that place leaving his grizzly mark behind.
They crossed the gates into Underworld that lay hidden in the city of blood (as it was now called) and there Veras met his guide, the soul of his aunt Laer had escaped her broken and powerless body and founds its way into a black butterfly which came to land on Veras’ finger. He would carry her with him for all of the trials to come, the first of which was to conquest of the outlying Underworld stronghold in a place that would could to be known as Veras Pass. Four legions, the former Melaer royal guard assaulted the stronghold of devils and triumphed, gaining their foothold in what was to be a long road ahead.
Pausing to consolidate his strength he took the advice of Laer and discarded the name Fenir, taking on the legacy of the former rulers of Underworld, A’vron. As the grandnephew of Baelze, the first ruler of Underworld, he had more entitlement to the name than any of the feudal lords who currently ruled Underworld with corruption and constant infighting. Claiming to be the coming of a new Vron Dynasty, Veras managed to gather supporters from disillusioned subjects of the feudal lords that flocked to him from the surrounding areas in numbers beyond his expectation.
The war to conquer Underworld was brief and violent. The feudal lords were shocked by the ferocity and tactical brilliance of this young upstart, everywhere he conquered he turned his former enemies into allies and his army swelled to numbers beyond reckoning. Something changed in him and the legions who had accompanied him, they began to evolve with each battle until when their army stood at the walls of the imperial city of Underworld itself they were not longer melaer but true devils. The last lord refused to surrender and Veras crushed him, Underworld now bowed to a new master.
Veras gained the title of Krell in Underworld and was crowned a month after his final victory, the few lords who remained were not willing to take up arms against him again and bowed their knee, remembering the fate of those who had continued to defy their new king. So Veras took his lonely throne, from which he could begin his war upon his father in Overworld. Once his power was consolidated and Underworld restructured to his liking, the first devil feet touched ground in Overworld as the great crusade began - a campaign that would come to be known as the Divine War.
During the constant war between Underworld and Overworld, Veras came to imprison one of the four Seraph, Maerim. He sought to learn secrets from her, weaknesses in Overworld’s defenses and the like. The two spoke a great deal during her imprisonment and he came to learn that she was the seer who had told his father of the prophecy that Veras would one day destroy him, her unique abilities made her able to see into his mind and rather than find a tyrant she began to feel pity for him. A man betrayed by his father, hopelessly lost and drowning in a universe he did not yet fully comprehend, locked in a war against powers he didn’t yet hold himself.
Maerim came to realize that it was her fault that Veras was the man he had become, if she had not relayed her vision to Mael then Veras would still be ruling Melandrisia. Seeing the truth of Mael she pledged herself to Veras and was released from prison, giving her oath with blood so that he could bind her to it she began to fight for Underworld. With her decision some angels who also had misgivings defected too, and the war began to turn in Underworld’s favour. But the war had taken its toll on both sides and finally a truce was called, suggested by Mael and at first Veras had been about to throw it out but it was Maerim who persuaded him to accept it.
Centuries passed during the truce, the twins Daziriel and Damian grew older and became capable leaders in their own right, starting to command Underworld’s armies as princes and Generals in their own right. Veras and Maerim married, having long since fallen in love with one another, the old lords grumbled of an angel sat as Queen in Underworld but they would not dare speak their protests aloud. The peace continued and Underworld flourished, new cities were built and the people began to enjoy peace, the army grew and prepared for the inevitable resumption of war but it was left an afterthought. Veras and Maerim parented twins, Isaan and Furyae, but only a week after their births the war resumed. Daziriel and Damian were sent to the frontlines, where they would remain for the next century.
During their absence, tragedy struck the new royal family. Working towards his own agenda, the God of Wisdom, Valen came to Underworld seeking use of Underworld’s extensive records and library which was now under the care of Melaus. Veras granted permission, having no reason not to trust the god, who had come from the Divine City and had no ties to Mael or Overworld. But Valen betrayed them, after studying for a while in the library as he intended he infiltrated the palace gardens where Maerim and a five year old Isaan were playing. He had come to slay Isaan for reasons unknown, and Maerim naturally fought to defend her son.
Veras felt the emotions of his wife and son but by the time he arrived he found Isaan stood in wide eyed shock, the blood of his mother on his face, clothes and hands. Maerim lay dead and Valen was seen fleeing into a portal of his own devising before Veras could catch him. Isaan did not cry, he did not even whimper, the child just stood there looking broken and empty. Veras knelt at his wife’s side and cradled her body, tears streaming down his face as he wept over her, a devil’s tears that are so rare that a single one can redeem a damned soul from Hell were falling constantly and mixing with Maerim’s blood.
Whether out of shock or in his anguish at the moment a great light tore through the palace gardens, firing like a beam out into the cosmos as the light in his soul was cast out in defiance of his father’s beliefs that only light should exist and darkness was not necessary. Veras stumbled back to his throne a husk of himself and fell upon it, where his mind retreated into itself because he could feel a great power building with his rage and threatening to break out. It frightened him, and so he hide within himself to escape its fury and save the universe the damage he might do to it in his sorrow.
Time passed with him in this state, centuries, millennia. It was his son, Damian, who finally drew him out again. There was a being in the throne room with them, one he had not seen before and Damian was fighting it, protecting Veras while it should have been Veras who protected his son. Whatever the being was it wanted a host and it was seeking to use Veras for it, it insisted it could save Underworld and crush Mael but there was a malice to the thing that both Veras and Damian could feel. Father and son fought side by side against this creature, a battle that took them to the very edge of Underworld below which was only Tartarus - home of demonkind.
The being was too powerful though and it looked as though the pair may fail, but at the last moment in an act of courage Damian threw himself onto the being and allowed it to take him as a host. As it fought to control him he used his last moments to tell his father to cast him into Hell where the being would be imprisoned, he said that the only way to save Underworld and all that they had built was to cage it inside a host. Veras agreed, his heart breaking as he held his son over the edge of Underworld, with only the fires of damnation below. Damian begged him to erase him from the minds of the universe, to make it as though he had never existed because so long as he did his brothers and sister would not let him remain locked away.
Veras let go and watched as Damian fell into the pits of Hell, where Tartarus and torture surely awaited. He returned to his throne and silently stared ahead as he pulled Damian from existence, taking him from mind and writing, nobody but Veras would remember the hero his son was or that he even had a son named Damian - who had given everything for his family. Veras closed his eyes again and vanished into himself, a new pain weighing on him that threatened to join with the still heavy loss of Maerim and turn him into something he did not want to become.
That was the last time Veras opened his eyes. Millennia passed and though avatars known only as Krell appeared from time to time to do his work, the man on the throne never stirred. He was blamed for many horrors while in his catatonic state, Mael has claimed Krell to have performed many of the terrible acts he himself has done, as a means of propaganda both among mortals and immortals. The most recent is the destruction of Melandrisia, the planet Veras once called home, Mael has claimed that it was devils and Veras who destroyed the people he was born to. It's easy to use a man that cannot currently answer the claims against him, and Mael is taking advantage of that to the fullest.
Despite his state however, his avatars have created new bonds; a new son through a devil’s deal that might fill the gap that Damian had left, and a new love who in time could perhaps awaken him from his eternal coma and let him feel peace again. But for now the people of Underworld gaze up at the palace and wonder: what became of the force of nature that swept aside the old regime and built the new, would they ever see that man again, or was his time already long past?
