There are times where Isaan can feel the weight of his duties but he rarely opens up to others, even his son, but there is his serving girl Liandri who acts as a sort of stand-in counsellor when he needs an ear to get things off his chest.

History:

Isaan and his twin sister, Furyae, were born only a week before a truce between Underworld and Overworld ended which resulted in the resumption of hostilities between the two. Because of the war Isaan grew up without knowing his older brother, Daziriel, but his early life was far from hard or unhappy. Both of his parents cared for him deeply and much of his time was spent playing with his sister, and listening to stories told by his mother who he adored. Isaan could certainly have been labelled a mommy’s boy, for he spent much of his time following his mother around asking questions which she patiently answered.

But his mother was to be taken from him early in life, he was only five coming six when in the palace gardens the pair were set upon by the corrupt god, Valen. It was Isaan that he wanted and Maerim was not going to let him harm her son, Isaan looked on frightened as his mother fought against their attacker. But Isaan couldn’t stay out of it, he wanted to help his mother who he loved so much, and he tried to help. But being so young his powers were volatile and they flared up violently, knocking Maerim and dazing her which allowed Valen to strike a fatal blow and Isaan to be covered in her blood.

He stood there in shock as Valen tried to flee, and his mother smiled at him wordlessly in her last moments, even though it was he who was responsible for her death by trying to get involved. No words came from her as she passed, he barely registered the arrival of his father as he stood there numb to the world around him. His father wept and Isaan saw the bright light that was part of his father’s soul being cast away, but as his father left he continued to stare at the broken body of his mother until it vanished as all immortals did on death in shower of sparkling white light. He finally walked into the palace, more on autopilot than of his own power, eyes wide and shaking violently as he went.

It was Furyae who finally found him and took him with her, ever the more mature of the pair she washed the blood from him and for the days to come she nursed him, trying to get him to eat or play games again like he used to. She could see something had broken in her brother and nothing she did seemed to fix it, but finally at the memorial for their mother two weeks later Isaan broke down. Hugging his sister he wailed as only a child in anguish could and his sister held and cried with him, while Isaan said it was all his fault and that their attacker had been after him and that he only wanted to try and help.

The years went by and Isaan grew older, his attitude changed and he became a serious troublemaker, many looked down on him for his behaviour and considered him a lesser son of a greater lineage. Like all devils he attended the academy in the city, where he met his first and closest friend, Lancera. Lancera was the son of one of the archdevils, Yomi, who was a loyal retainer of the imperial family. At first Isaan behaved toward him the way he did everyone, with sarcasm and harsh jokes to push him away, but Lancera wouldn’t be so easily thrown off and Isaan eventually opened up to him.

Through Lancera’s influence, Isaan calmed down some though continued to cause his tutors at the academy problems. Isaan was fairly bad at combat, but Lancera taught him the art of wielding a katana and soon Isaan was a capable swordsman taking away some of the ire he gained at the academy. To commemorate his advancement as a swordsman, Lancera presented Isaan with a katana of masterful quality which he still carries to this day. In their last year at the academy Isaan persuaded Lancera to skip class one day, and lay in the shade of a tree being his usual lazy self, much to Lancera’s protest. But laying there under the tree Lancera kissed Isaan, which began their romantic relationship together.

After graduating from the academy, Isaan and Lancera were made partners by imperial edict, meaning they would undertake special assignments together as agents of Underworld. During this period, the pair also married, bringing Isaan a measure of peace which he had not had since the loss of his mother some fifteen years prior. The two became successful together, as agents they also caught the notice of the devil lord Dragos, who was head of the Underworld inquisition whose duty it was to seek out and slay demonic forces in the universe under the orders of High Prince Daziriel - Isaan’s older brother and acting regent in his father’s catatonic state.

But the pair declined an offer to join the inquisition, content in their duties as agents for the throne rather than the inquisition. Twenty years later though, Valen finally caught up with Isaan. They were on a routine assignment on one of the smaller floating land masses between Underworld and Overworld, sifting through some ruins when the corrupt god made his presence known. The pair fought against Valen together, but during the fight Isaan was thrown from the edge of the temple to the ground below. He rushed to return to the fight, but by the time he arrived it was too late, Valen was gone and nothing remained of Lancera but ash on the ground.

Isaan cried out in rage and grief, Valen had stolen a loved one from him a second time and yet he still didn’t know why the god was targeting him. Isaan returned to Underworld alone and made his report and after that he lost himself to his carnal side, visiting the city constantly to drown himself in immortal-made alcohol and women’s bodies, he would regain his position as a lesser son of a greater name and gain the ire of many devil lords for seducing their daughters and making himself a constant nuisance to their family’s honour.

Several centuries went by with Isaan behaving this way, until his older brother Daziriel had had enough of his brother’s behaviour. Finally, Daziriel confronted him about it and at first Isaan tried to dodge his questions with cocky and sarcastic answers, but after a punch to the jaw that saw him hit the ground hard Isaan opened up. He poured his soul out to his brother, telling him how he felt empty and was just doing the same thing their father had, only with a different method of coping. Daziriel understood, but told Isaan that if he was any sort of man or devil, he would not wallow and would make it his duty to gain the power to find and destroy Valen for his mother and husband.

Touched by his brother’s words, Isaan vanished from Underworld and took his first steps into the wider universe. His travels took him to many places, where he excavated and sought out lost knowledge from the times before the divine order, when immortals and mortals still shared one realm. Gathering new powers and knowledge over time, Isaan even forced mortality onto himself to train with different groups of monks and orders who practiced different styles of combat to make himself a more rounded fighter. It was while in this state of forced mortality that Isaan grew to appreciate the strengths of mortals, and he grew to sympathize and understand them better than most immortals.

During his travels he came across a girl named Liandri, a fay who had been cast out of her realm because she apparently carried the curse of an inner devil. This was unheard of for anyone who was not themselves a devil, and Isaan felt for her as one outcast for for another and so he took her in. The two would begin to travel together, with Liandri acting as his serving girl and also his investigative partner in his search for power and lost knowledge. She also forced mortality onto herself with him, learning the ways of fighting from mortal masters alongside Isaan and also undergoing training from Isaan himself.

With time the pain began to subside and Isaan even managed to fall in love again a few times, but Valen was never far behind. Some of those he loved he lost because their mortal lives came to an end naturally, others simply because the relationship did not survive the test of time. But a good number were slain as Lancera had been, Valen seemed to be hounding him wherever he went, claiming the lives of those he loved as if trying to break him. This made Isaan cynical about love, he grew distant and started to avoid it as much as possible, keeping the girl Liandri as his only company because he had trained her to be able to fight with him.

Eventually, Dragos caught up with Isaan again in the mortal realm. He extended his offer for Isaan to join the inquisition a second time, this time he accepted and became an inquisitor serving under Dragos. He met Rainak this way, who was acting as a lieutenant for Dragos and they did good work together, but Isaan started to have doubts about Dragos. His zealotry seemed to be blinding him, more and more they seemed to be killing villages full of people who didn’t particularly have anything to do with demonic forces or sorcery simply because they had had a sorcerer amongst them briefly.

These reservations finally came to a head when they assaulted a small village on a fairly peaceful world that was around medieval levels of development. Isaan found a young woman cradling her baby girl in her arms in an alley and when two of his fellow inquisitors came into the alley and went to kill her, he slew them himself to rescue her and the child. He picked the woman up and ran from the village with her, getting far enough away to release her and gave her enough money to make a new life in another town. Dragos caught up with them and he told the girl to flee, then turned on Dragos and his supporters to block the way and give the girl and her child time to escape.

Many of the inquisitors would not raise their weapons against Isaan as he was a prince of Underworld, but nor would they fight against Dragos and so they turned their backs as Dragos and his supporters moved against Isaan. But to Isaan’s surprise, Rainak stepped in on Isaan’s side and the pair of them took down a dozen inquisitors together, before fighting Dragos as a pair and slaying him. The inquisitors who remained pledged themselves to Isaan, who told them that the old inquisition was dead and they were no longer of Underworld, they were their own faction who would fight darkness wherever it took hold. Midnight was born that night.

After the formation of Midnight, Isaan returned to his journey for lost knowledge with Liandri, this time with Rainak journeying with them too. Together they discovered signs of the Creator, and writings of a prison where the Creator’s son Baelze was sealed, putting together the writings they found it was determined that the Creator was also sealed in this prison likely as the only way to hold Baelze in place long enough to close the prison around him. They traced the co-ordinates and eventually got a match, but Isaan refused to take Rainak and Liandri with him, saying that Midnight needed to be made ready if this really was the place they were seeking.

Thus the trio went their separate ways, while Rainak and Liandri trained and recruited people into Midnight, Isaan travelled for the first time to Aurela - some thousand years before the arrival of the Midnight contingent. At first Isaan was surprised to find out that the prison was actually a planet, some kind of dream world created as a manifestation of the eternal war between Baelze and the Creator. What also surprised him was that the planet seemed to have races that were actually natively from other planets, though he supposed it made sense considering the whole place was just a dream made manifest.

Isaan walked among them and it was during his search that in a small human town, he accidentally got caught using some of his powers. The golden haired girl who noticed him was named Sona and she was very forward about having done so, Isaan tried to get rid of her not least because he could feel his heart pounding and that was something he tried to flee from these days. But Sona kept following him, until in an alley the pair were set upon by strange beings Isaan had never seen before, they were strong enough to give him a challenge even with the powers he had garnered in his travels.

He dispatched them and knowing he couldn’t leave Sona now because the creatures would find her, having seen her with him, he grabbed her and took flight into the night sky to hide. The pair ended up travelling north together, Isaan was searching for the seals on the prison, his goal of course was to bring the Creator back but he knew that doing so could also bring back Baelze. It was a risk he was willing to take. On their travels, Isaan had given into his feelings for Sona, deciding that this being a world that none had found in eons, Valen surely could not follow and so it was safe to let himself love again.

They continued north until one day while staying at an inn, Sona hit Isaan with some surprising news, she was pregnant. Their travels immediately came to a stop as the pair awaited the arrival of their child, settling down in a small home in the forest where the creatures of Baelze could not find them, their son was born. He was named Seth’ryal and he grew up with his parents in the woods, learning to hunt and chop wood more than he learned how to be an immortal. Being in the mortal realm where time moved more quickly, Seth’ryal aged far more quickly than he normally would and was a grown adult in just a year. But Isaan had kept searching on the side for the seals he was looking for and finally he’d found one, Sona and Isaan had to leave Seth’ryal at their home and travel north together.

Bidding their son farewell and of course promising to return within a month, the two travelled north into the northernmost human territories. It took them a week to find the ruins Isaan had heard of and find the seal, which they then spent another week trying to open, when it did however it was not the Creator or Baelze who came but another being that called itself Noth. The being formed as a shadow and Isaan was forced to fight it, he was no match and was bested even with Sona fighting beside him. While injured on the ground, Isaan witnessed Sona’s death and for the first time his inner devil took over, Samael fought with Noth and seemed capable of standing toe to toe.

Unfortunately, he was still bested and Noth invaded Isaan’s mind, taking him as a host. For the next two hundred years Isaan would remain a prisoner of Noth and thus was the undead horde known by their master’s name created, with the controlled Isaan as their figurehead. But Isaan was biding his time and when a group of knights came to try and slay Noth, he saw his chance to escape, with the aid of Samael he managed to drive Noth out and into the mind of one of the knights. He felt guilt for having to force another into the position he had been in, but he knew it was necessary and fled to try and find Seth’ryal.

He found no sign of him in the forest where their home had been, in fact their home seemed to have been long abandoned as it was just a pile of wood in a clearing. With a heavy heart, Isaan returned to Underworld to find Rainak and Liandri. To his surprise, Seth’ryal was already there, not just that but he was also an inquisitor in Midnight working with Rainak and Liandri to prepare Midnight for the campaign to come. Isaan and Seth’ryal were reunited, but Isaan had to break the news of Sona, Seth’ryal however seemed to already know and brushed it aside not wanting to discuss it.

And so Midnight prepared itself, for the next eight centuries it trained, grew stronger and steeled its members for the eventual incursion into Aurela. There was revenge to be had, but also the Creator to release, and Noth was going to be waiting for them. Isaan still had the ire of the lords of Underworld, but he had grown strong enough for them not to want to challenge him and he would not be called a lesser son of a greater name any longer.
